Research has consistently found that traditional lecture is not the most effective way for students to learn compared to more interactive, student-centered approaches. Even with this knowledge, a large hurdle remains: how do we encourage faculty members to adopt research-based teaching practices? To address this issue, the Center for Excellence in the Eberly College of Science has implemented an annual, week-long Evidence-Based Teaching Academy (EBTA) designed to immerse faculty in thinking about teaching and producing a usable product for the following academic year. Over the last five years, 115 ECoS faculty have participated in the annual EBTA run by fellow faculty member facilitators. In this presentation, we will share information about the structure and implementation of the EBTA, as well as assessment data from several years of the workshop. We look forward to leading a discussion about sustaining positive changes in teaching across Penn State.
